How do you stand in a fallen world? How do you maintain your spiritual integrity in an incredibly seductive culture? How do you keep God on the throne your existence and your ambitious appetites in check? This September, join us as we seek to answer all of these questions and more in a powerful new sermon series entitled "Daniel: Standing in a Fallen World" ... keep God on the throne OF your existence
(We also invite you to join us each Sunday evening at 6:00 pm for our current study!)
It is the year 605 B.C. and the ancient city of Babylon is at the zenith of her power; a WONDER to behold.
Fifthy-six miles of impenetrable walls framing some 200 square miles of state-of-the-art buildings, teeming entertainment centers, thriving businesses, at least three palaces, and extravagant temples to numerous gods. Towering above the wall was a 650-foot glimmering enamel ziggurat. In the midst of the city were the Hanging Gardens – one of the 7 wonders of the world. Through the center of town ran the palm-fringed Euphrates river, and on the throne was the greatest ruler of the Neo-Babylonian period; one of the most competent monarchs of all time. This King was so powerful; so larger than life that almost every brick in that city bore the proud inscription "I am Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon."
Over time Babylon's fortress walls finally crumbled, but they could no longer contain her anyway. You see, somewhere along the way, she ceased to be only a place. She became a mentality.
Wealth...power...beauty...youth...fame...money...sex...pleasure...success...WORLDLINESS. That strong gravitational pull to live a self-centered, self-indulgent, self-absorbed little life; this is what Babylon was all about.
So what would happen if you were to take a child of God and drop them right into the center of this "friendly captivity"? How would they fare? How would they deal with emotions like fear and sorrow and anger? Would they keep their faith? Would they compromise? Would they cave in to despair...or rise to the occasion?
I pray you can join us this month for our study in Daniel. May God help us to stand in a fallen world!
